Diamonds: What’s the Story?
A diamond goes through a lot before it reaches the jeweler’s display case. It forms deep in the earth under extreme heat and pressure. It gradually makes its way upward and emerges from the depths of the earth, forced out by nature or by man. Nature’s beautiful product is then given to man to be cut, polished and fashioned until its ultimate beauty shines through.
Adopted from the Greek work adamas, meaning “invincible,” diamonds come in a wide range of colors such as black, blue, green, pink, red, purple, orange, and yellow. Their durability and hardness make them the perfect symbol of a lasting relationship.
In 1477, Archduke Maximillian of Austria commissioned the very first diamond engagement ring on record for his betrothed, Mary of Burgundy. This sparked a trend for diamond rings among European aristocracy and nobility. The rest of the world adopted the growing trend and the diamond industry developed and continues today as one of the worlds largest industries .
